Some years ago I received an album in my mail box called GR's Xperiments From Within The Tentacular, a fantastic psychedelic album by a french guitarist, Gregory Raimo. Being the singer for the trio Gunslingers, GR has never stopped to play a damaged rock n' roll and has also collaborated with Michael Yonkers. He finally comes back with this new album A Reverse Age out on Mexican Summer.
I am really glad to make this show possible. Currently on tour, High Wolf will perform here with noise makers Prairie Litière and solo artist Ellah A. Thaun with her lo-fi psychedelic tunes. If by any chance you are in the area (Rouen, France), don't miss that.
This is a compilation of various artists to raise money for Tom Carter's recovery. He has been hospitalized in Berlin last summer for a pneumonia. Tom Carter is a drone guitarist who has co-founded Charalambides (with Christina Carter) and has collaborated with various musicians and bands including Thurston Moore, Bardo Pond, Zaika, Inca Ore... This is an extract of Life Destroyer dvd by Alivia Zivich for the viusals and Nate Young for the sound. This is not really new, it was released few years ago on AA records (Wolf Eyes'label) and certainly out of print now.
Èl-g is a french experimental artist who has been active in solo for years and in the trio Reines D'angleterre with Jo Tanz and Ghedalia Tazartes. He has performed with Tomutonttu and a lot of of noise makers. The first title is an extract from Der Prediger, a cdr released on Young Girls records. A dark and cold wave track with Èl-g uncanny voice. I really dig this one. The second extract is a preview of the next Èl-g album Mil Pluton out soon on Alter records and Hundebiss.
Evan Caminiti, one half of the great duo Barn Owl released last summer his album Dreamless Sleep on Thrill Jockey. Mixing drone guitars and synthesizers, he has created beautiful soundscapes like strange dreams.
Video for Spirits from Plankton Wat's album released on Thrill Jockey. Plankton Wat is the solo project of Dewey Mahood, the guitarist in the band Eternal Tapestry and a collaborator with Jackie O Motherfucker, Barn Owl, Edibles... A new video for Psychic Ills' Take Me With You by Robert Beatty and Coleman Guyon. I've already talked about Robert Beatty's work and music here and I really like what he has done recently, whether the record covers, the posters or this video.
I've started to publish zines with the help of a risograph printer. The first one is about the Baader Meinhof gang in Germany and the cultural background (music, movies, intellectuals...). Only in images. The second one will be From Beyond, a compilation of interviews I did few years ago with Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))...), Tim Green, Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel, Our Love Will Destroy the World...), Circle and others. You can purchase the first zine here.
Evan Caminiti is a prolific drone guitarist, playing with Barn Owl and Higuma. He released Night Dust under his own name few months ago on Immune records and has a new project called Painted Caves. His first release Not Here Not There is available on his own imprint Dust editions. Not Here Not There is a six track album full of dreamy landscapes built on guitar, drone and textures. Another great piece of music by Evan Caminiti.
Vestals is the solo project of Lisa McGee (Portraits, Higuma). Shoegaze and psychedelic pop, her music should be the perfect soundtrack for this summer. Forever falling toward the sky will be out on Root Strata.
First excerpt from the next Helm album out soon on Pan. Helm is the project of Luke Younger, one half of the drone duo Birds of Delay. He creates some cold and haunting compositions from electronic and acoustic sources.
Prairie Litière is a noise duo from Rouen (France), my current city. They develop a kind of harsh noise not unlike Wolf Eyes, using electronic devices with effects. You can listen to their sound through their own label, Autistic Campaign. The photos were taken during a performance in an abandonned house which is used by a local contemporany art gallery (Mam galerie) as an art space.
This is a compilation of songs released previously on EPs. Tropic of Cancer is the project by Camella Lobo and is based in Los Angeles. If you like Suicide, Joy Division mixed with dream pop sound, you will probably enjoy The End of All Things.
The double album by Liz Harris A I A, Dream Loss and Alien Observer, has been released by Kranky on CD. For those who have missed the very limited vinyl edition, it's a good news.
Behind the hill is a documentary about the New Weird America (the name used by the Wire journalist David Keenan) scene in New England filmed by two danish friends. If you were into that freak folk music or still are, it will probably interest you. You can watch it free here. It features interviews with MV & EE, Feathers, Asa Irons, Sunburned...
This is an extract from the next Man Forever release Pansophical Cataract out on Thrill Jockey in May. Man Forever is the project of Oneida's drummer, John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions). Man Forever is an interesting mix of drum patterns, drone and repetition. He has performed live with various musicians from Yo La Tengo, Parts & Labor, Sightings, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Liturgy... We have just to wait to hear more.
A new 45 minutes tape by Daniel Higgs (ex Lungfish) is available now on Gnome Life Records. This is how the label describes it: "This tape is a 45 minute magnetic fossilization of Daniel Higgs' energy field. It is divided between three tracks of epic proportion: a revelational instrumental banjo improvisation, an entheogenic song performed on banjo and larynx, and an ecstatic mythopoetic recitation." Return
A really beautiful album by Mike Wexler. Think about the Canterbury scene (Soft Machine, etc...) and folk and add some modern songwriting and a perfect sound. Dispossession is available on Mexican Summer.
Ben Vida has been around for quite a while, having played in bands such as Town & Country and solo as Bird Show. He has collaborated with many artists such as Hisham Bharoocha, Kevin Drumm, Yamatsuka Eye and C. Spencer Yeh. esstends-esstends-esstends is a drone piece based on spatializatiion created for Computer Controlled Modular Synthesizer and Digital Signal Processing. The record is available in a beautiful LP via Bill Kouligas' imprint, Pan.
The duo Angels In America, Moppy Pont and Merv Glisten are active for some years now, having released few tapes. Their dark new wave may find sources in artists like Lydia Lunch and the noise and industrial scene. Anyways, it's beautiful, very dark and haunting. Narrow Road To The Interior was released last year on Ehse records, where you can buy or download the LP and a new tape A Public Ranking is available on Night People.
Mirroring is Liz Harris (Grouper) and Jesy Fortino (Tiny Vipers) and if you don't know them yet separately, I recommend you to check out their music. On Foreign Body, they create a haunting, folk music filled with voices and noise. Out in march on Kranky. Mirroring: Fell Sound
Beautiful extract for the forthcoming LP An Age of Wonder by Je suis le Petit Chevalier (Félicia Atkinson) on Shelter Press and La Station Radar and mastered by Pete Sawnson (Yellow Swans).
The duo of Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and Elisa Ambrogio (Magik Markers) have released an other LP for the Grapefruit record club. An other amazing record of blues jams according to them and a great companion to their Drag City album.
This is a documentary directed by Marie Losier, a portrait of Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV) and his partner Lady Jaye. This is about the relation between them through their "pandrogyny" project and mostly a biography of P-Orridge. He talked about his influences, writers like William S.Burroughs, Bryon Gysin and musicians like The Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett, his relation to the art world and his childhood. This movie was part of an evening presented by Jean Pierre Turmel who is an old friend of Genesis P.Orridge and Sordide Sentimental's (records label) owner, who has released records by Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle and also Joy Division. Psychic TV: The Orchids
Félicia Atkinson is a visual and sound artist who sometimes creates music under the name Je suis le petit chevalier.
